Through a collaboration between the IRC and the MDD program, this interactive design project aims to reveal the human stories behind migration data, shedding light on the personal journeys of refugees and promoting empathy and understanding. Throughout the course of this project, we interviewed both employees and clients of the IRC. These individuals were generous and compassionate in their engagement in our project. The outcome of our design process is an interactive installation that engages travelers in the stories behind migration data. Sited at international airports, the installation displays migration metrics between regions, as shown in the diagram above. When a user selects regions by touch, they become activated, allowing the user to more clearly see the flow of people within that specific context. During this interaction, a story of a displaced person from the selected regions is shown. This is to highlight that there are real people’s journeys behind the data.
