Imminent is a project based on creating a cost-effective form of security that serves a dual purpose; providing discrete protection, and increasing awareness, all while being worn comfortably on the body.
The design is centered around movements and awareness in history that emphasize the need for self-protection. Breaking away from gender stereotypes, Imminent is not just tailored for women but addresses the concerns of everyone. Its discreet and casual design epitomizes simplicity and strength, both in aesthetics and functionality. Imminent goes beyond typical self-defense tools by aligning with natural trauma responses (fight, flight, and freeze), allowing instinctive reactions without the need for conscious thought. This feature is crucial in high-stress situations, allowing the wearer to navigate through adversity with a heightened sense of control.
Designed as a wearable extension of a broader movement, inspired by Denim Day, to push the fact that it doesn’t matter what one wears. The significant deliberate choice of stone was inspired by the Medusa tattoo movement. This carries profound symbolism linked to victimhood and raising awareness. Much like the tattoo, it allows one to reclaim and hold onto one’s identity. In contrast, the incorporation of metal brings an element of strength and support, embodying resilience in the face of adversity.
The deliberate omission of color in this project serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it allows the various pieces of armor to engage in a dynamic interaction with their chosen materials, creating a visual narrative that goes beyond the palette. Secondly, it underscores a crucial message that the issues addressed are not confined to a singular gender. By stripping away color, the project boldly emphasizes that these challenges are not exclusive to women; rather, they are universal concerns that demand collective acknowledgment and action.
The overarching objective is to instill a sense of empowerment and foster physical, mental, and emotional control in situations that extend beyond individual control. This psychological aspect of the design not only contributes to the wearer's overall sense of security but also facilitates coping mechanisms in stressful situations, creating a harmonious balance between form and function.
In essence, this project goes beyond the superficiality of fashion, evolving into a powerful statement that engages with historical movements, contemporary awareness, and the shared responsibility of society. Through the careful selection of materials and the intentional design choices, it becomes a tangible representation of a collective stand against issues that affect us all, fostering a narrative of unity, strength, and awareness.
