DesignArts Utah 2021
Kassie John - 2021
Design senior, Kassie John (B.S. Design ’22) was included in the annual DesignArts Utah 2021 Exhibit. The Utah Division of Arts & Museums curates this annual juried show celebrating design across the state. The juror for this year was Antionette Carroll who is the Founder, President and CEO of Creative Reaction Lab, a nonprofit educating and deploying youth to challenge racial and health inequities impacting Black and Latinx populations. Antionette selected 19 works from 39 Utah designers working in a broad representation across design media and called out the excellence of Utah's design students and their work this year.
From Kassie: “Yá’át’ééh, Shí eí Kassie John yinishyé. Diné Bikéyah déé’ naashá. Diné asdzání nishłj. Greeting’s relatives and my fellow Indigenous Womxn, this is a project documenting the interconnected, transdisciplinary and my own beloved journey exploring and expanding upon our identities as Indigenous, Native, First-Nations Womxn. Where I will be illustrating a few aspects of our indigeneity, showcasing a snapshot of our cultural and political presence. While telling stories of our sisterhood and discussing our immediate impacts within our own communities, this is a series designed for social impact using Instagram as platform to share our power, strength, and resiliency for all to see. By shifting the cultural narrative back to our people, citing and sourcing role models and key figure heads in our Womxn community.”
